Malia is a modern town in northern Crete. The town of Malia of now a touristical place with lots activities. But outside the town, a few kilometers away, along the northern mainroad is the old city of Malia. At least, this is the way people called it today. After the new town. It is not known, what the ancient name was. According to legend the brother of King Minos ruled here. His name was Sarpedon. The ruler of this lovely place, not so far from the sea, lived in a palace.
Today you can visit this palace. Not so splendid as Knossos, but after all Sarpedon. was just the brother of The King of Crete. His palace was smaller and lies away from the Minoan economic activities. Malia was an agricultural place. From here came the food-supply needed in the big cities.
A little to the north of ancient Malia towards the sea is a funeral place called Chrisolakos. Here was the famous bee pendant found. Two bees sucking at a drop of honey. Also a agricultural product.
If you walk further to the sea you find a nice quiet beach. Back at the palace you walk through the little streets wondering who walked here before. With some imagination you see the tiny grocery shop with the fresh vegetables. The same things you can buy today in Crete.
After your visit it is time for a cool refreshment
