Lassithi

Lassithi is a part of Crete, a nomos or a province. It is in the middle of the island between the nomos of Iraklion and the nomos of Sitia.
Taking the main coastal road to the east, you find a crossroad just before you enter Hersonisos, which lead to the plain of Lassithi.
Before you reach this
plain, you have to clime to a considerable height. At the highest point, you come at the Kera-pass.
Just before the ledge, which leads you the fertile plain, you find a monastery (at Kera).
During the second world war this monastery was a refuge for the Cretan resistance.
And then you enter the plain. From the Kera-pass you have a magnificent view over the Lassithi plain.
You see the hunderds of windmills, which bring the water in the cisterns close to the windmills. Gradually the farmers irrigate the ground and a lot of crops grow
on the plain. Vegestables, potatoes and different kind of fruit grow on this plain. There is a road running round the plain, which runs through most of the villages and towns. If you come down from the kera-pass you take at the crossroad
the road to the left and you have the long road to the Diktean Cave.
After a ride along almost the whole plain you arrive at the Diktean Cave. It is said that baby Zeus was born here. Indeed finds have been done in the cave, covering from ancient Minoan time untill more recent. The Diktean Cave is a good resting point. There are a few taverna, where you enjoy the surrounding mountains before of after you went inside the cave.
