Kíùóóïò

Knossos, the major city in Minoan time, but also in later time it was well known. Homer mentioned the existence of 90 cities on Crete and one of these was Knossos.
Already 1878 the cretan Minos Kalokairinos did some excavations in this spot. But the major breakthrough happened in the beginning of the previous century, when a British scholar start digging at this place. And he did this on the ride place. In a few weeks time after he started the excavation, Arthur Evans, uncovered a large part of what later seems to be the troneroom and parts of the storeroom.

Nowadays you enters the palace from the west side. In the past there were many entrances to the palace.
While walking under a passages of trees you suddenly stand on the west court and see the vast wall which forms the back of the storeroom with its many vases and store-jars (pithos - ðièáñé )

Walking further to the south, you actually enter the palace along the propyleum to the central court. From here you view every part of the palace and its surrounding buildings. To your left is the troneroom with its famous trone.
