Chania

You find Chania, the formal capital of Crete, in western Crete.

Akrotiri

The Peninsula of Akrotiri is easy to find as busses are going there from Chania.
You must not miss the Memorial of Eleftherios Venizelos and his son Sophokles.
Born in Chania in 1864, Eleftherios Venizelos was the first statesman of Crete and he was strong in national politics.
From Akrotiri is a panoramic view towards Chania and the surrounding district.

Market

At the centre of Chania you will find the famous market which his layout is in the form of a cross. You can find different kind of food, like fresh fish, bread meat, vegetables and fruits. You also can buy medicines, shoes and books.
It is a perfect place to see the real life of people of Crete.
There is a friendly atmosphere and it's a nice change from the modern shops.

Samaria

The Samaria Gorge is the longest in Europe.(18 km)
In the winter-time it is closed but you can visit is early in the spring.
You climb down into the gorge from a path known as "Xiloskalo" which means wooden ladder,
And is made from old trees. You need strong shoes, water-resistant and comfortable, sunglasses and some luggage. You have to walk for about six hours, so take your time to go so you can start at 08:00pm.
If you want to overnight then you must book your accommodation in advance.
The gorge is absolutely a fascinating place. Cypresses and kermes oaks, Cretan corymbs are growing here.
Falcons and eagles soar above the rocks. In earlier times, people could often see the mountain goat known as 'kri-kri' or 'Agrimi' in Cretan language.
Further up, about 6km after you are in the gorge, there is a Byzantine church of Osia Maria the
Egyptian. This is the place that gave the gorge its name.(Santa-Maria, Sa-Maria)
